The editorial board said it would “eagerly” consider Romney, now a U.S. Johnson in 1964, “the Sentinel backed Republican presidential nominees from 1952 through 2004,” the editorial board wrote.īut the Sentinel noted Tuesday that its “non-endorsement isn’t defaulting to whomever the Democrats choose” as their nominee to take on Trump in the general election. The paper supported Republican Mitt Romney over Democratic incumbent Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential race, and with the exception of President Lyndon B. Though the Sentinel endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over Trump in 2016, the paper has a long history of favoring GOP candidates for the White House. The Sentinel dubbed Trump’s “successful assault on truth” as “the great casualty of this presidency, followed closely by his war on decency” and said the commander in chief “has diminished our standing in the world.” Enough of the chaos, the division, the schoolyard insults, the self-aggrandizement, the corruption, and especially the lies.” She’ll be a valuable member of the board as it takes on a set of thorny issues generated by the pandemic.“After 2½ years we’ve seen enough. A former elementary-school teacher, she’s been a rock-solid member of the board, sensible and pragmatic. Voters should return Castor Dentel for a full four-year term. Karen Castor Dentel served a single, two-year term in the state Legislature but returned to politics in 2018 by winning this seat, which her predecessor vacated early. Scott, however, presents a clearer picture of his priorities for Orange County schools, and would make the better School Board member. Scott is thoughtful about the issues facing Orange County schools, and it’s clear he cares about young people having successful futures.Ī third candidate is Vicki-Elaine Felder, who has several decades of teaching experience and a heart for students. Scott is deeply involved in volunteer work in the community, from Scouting to county committees to other charities. He hasn’t bothered to create a website where people can go to see what he believes and what he wants to do. Antone is running as if he expects a coronation. Ordinarily, we might defer to the legislative experience of candidate Bruce Antone, a state House representative who is leaving office because of term limits. They’re running for a seat being vacated by longtime board member Kat Gordon. This is the only School Board race without an incumbent. Gould has been in the thick of it, and is in a better place to make consequential decisions that will stay with kids for years to come. The other candidate is Dayna Gaut, a former teacher and paramedic. Navy veteran, has run for different offices - county commission and Congress - before. The challengers in this race didn’t make a good enough case for unseating Gould. Gould’s eyes seem wide open about the challenges facing Orange County, and her current job in public health ought to help. It’s not a bad attribute for someone who’s making decisions that affect so many thousands of students and families. Those jobs suggest a person with empathy for those in need.
